Residency Programs

 

All of the Maricopa Integrated Health System residencies offer unique opportunities for learning during their program years. For information on individual programs, please click on the name of the program below. Each departmental residency program brochure is available using this method. All programs offer opportunities for 4 th year medical school rotations, scheduled personal interview times, and participation in the NRMP.

Emergency Medicine - Maricopa Medical Center is the busiest trauma center in the Phoenix area. Residents are exposed to a wide variety of trauma, as well as routine emergency medicine. To broaden the experience, residents also rotate to other Emergency Departments in Valley hospitals to learn about emergency medicine in private hospital settings.

Internal Medicine - Approximately seventy-five percent of the graduates of this program enter general internal medicine. The program is ideally designed to train a well-rounded, competent internist to care for patients in the hospital as well as the ambulatory clinic. Approximately forty percent of training takes place in the ambulatory setting. The program offers a diverse exposure to medicine in family health care centers where residents experience continuity of care. Other features of the program are the rotations at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, which enable residents to learn about medical care in a large private clinic. Opportunities are also available for residents to take electives at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Obstetrics / Gynecology - This program is sponsored by Maricopa Medical Center, but is integrated with St. Joseph's Hospital thereby offering the experiential benefits of both a public and private hospital setting. The new labor and delivery suite and women's care center provide facilities for caring for a growing patient population. Residents also rotate through other private hospitals in the Phoenix area.

Pediatrics - This program is integrated with Phoenix Children's Hospital. The program features a strong ambulatory component, as well as an outstanding psycho-social curriculum. Residents rotate through school health clinics and other community settings.

Podiatric Medicine & Surgery - Postgraduate training in podiatric medicine and surgery at Maricopa Health System provides the challenges you might be looking for. Very few podiatrists ever get the opportunity to work at a level one trauma and burn facility.

Psychiatry - The Psychiatry program provides residents with individualized and progressive responsibilities to treat patients in acute and long-term settings. Affiliations with the Arizona State University Student Health Service, the Arizona State Hospital, the Regional Behavioral Health Authority and numerous community-based treatment settings allow the resident to gain a wide perspective on patient care while receiving extensive supervision in a broad range of classical and contemporary treatment modalities.

Child Psychiatry - The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program is the latest addition to the residency programs offered by MIHS. This ACGME accredited two-year training program enrolled its first residents in July 2003. Currently, the program consists of 4 positions, 2 per training year. An increase in the number to 6 total positions by 2005 is anticipated.

The program offers a comprehensive training in child and adolescent psychiatry. The program includes rotations at a variety of settings, providing a balanced clinical training experience. Rotations include inpatient, outpatient, and residential settings, and specialty clinics. Trainees receive ongoing individual supervision, in addition to rotation-specific supervision.

Radiology - Though the Radiology Residency is a new program the department of radiology is fully dedicated to resident growth and education. With the MIHS mission, To provide a full spectrum of high quality, wellness oriented healthcare in an organized, cost sensitive and customer oriented academic environment, in mind, our goal is to turn out competent, compassionate radiologist who will not only succeed on a professional level but also continue on as future educators.

Surgery - General surgery and surgical specialties currently use 132 beds at Maricopa Medical Center. We see a large caseload of Level I traumas, and our 20-bed Burn Center serves as a regional Burn Center. Affiliations include the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, and Medical Center, and Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. These relationships provide our residents with a diverse patient population and a wide variety of preoperative, operative and postoperative experiences.

What is ERAS?

 

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has developed ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service to transmit residency applications, Letters of Recommendation, Dean's Letters, transcripts, and other supporting documents to residency program directors via the Internet. ERAS is available to students and graduates of foreign medical schools through ECFMG, which serves as their designated Dean's Office.
